Storing wine properly lets you enjoy it for 3 to 5 days once opened. So after 3 to 5 days, the wine is past it. Don’t worry, you can still use it safely for plenty of purposes. Sauce or vinegar, you’ll be able to use this wine in many dishes.
Does wine expire?
Wine can go off. After 3 to 5 days open, the wine is past it and you won’t be able to drink it anymore. Expired wine isn’t dangerous: you might feel a little ill, but there’s no risk to your life. The biggest danger of expired wine is the taste. Try a sip and you’ll soon be cured of the idea.
So white wine goes off, just like red wine. Don’t wait too long to finish an open bottle. But don’t panic. If your wine goes off, there are always ways to put it to use.
Expired wine: what to do?
What can you do with expired wine? Good question. First, if the wine has only just gone off, you can use it in a sauce. Personally, we often use slightly past-it white wine to make a risotto. For expired red wine, you can turn to tagliatelle. We tried this recipe recently and, believe us, it was delicious. It really won us back over to that bottle that had been sitting in the kitchen for several days.
You can also use your expired wine to make vinegar. To do this, you first need to create a “mother”: a film that forms on the surface of the wine and turns it into vinegar. So leave a bottle of expired wine open for a few weeks. Once the mother has formed, pour it all into a vinegar pot. Add the dregs of your bottles whenever you don’t finish them. Then wait 4 to 6 weeks and you’ll have vinegar.
So don’t worry if your wine goes off. You’ll always find a way to put it to other uses. You might even make the best vinegar in the world, or the best red wine tagliatelle. Whether it’s your red wine or your white wine that goes off, there’s a solution!
Storing wine properly to keep it from going off
There are plenty of tricks for storing wine properly. First, be sure to keep your wine in a cellar at the right temperature. By doing so, you can store wine for many years without it going off. Once opened, things get trickier. To keep an opened bottle of wine, you should place it away from light and in a rather cool spot.
Also, once your bottle is open, you can use a vacuum pump. With one of these, you can remove the air in your bottle of wine and so prevent oxidation. You’ll then be able to keep the bottle longer without it going off.
