There are five words on these machines and they all mean the same thing.

Wine cooler. Wine fridge. Wine refrigerator. Wine cabinet. Wine cellar. Manufacturers use them interchangeably, retailers file them in one bucket, and the word printed on the box has no relationship to what is inside it. You will find a 6-bottle countertop thermoelectric unit called a wine cellar and a 164-bottle compressor cabinet called a wine cooler.

So if you are trying to work out which one you need, the vocabulary is not going to help you. Five other things will.

The five things that actually differ

Temperature range. This is the specification that decides what the machine is for. Something that runs 5 to 18 degrees can serve both whites and reds. Something that runs 5 to 12 can only serve whites and chill sparkling. Something locked around 12 is an ageing cabinet and is not trying to be anything else.

Number of zones. One zone means one temperature for everything inside. Two or three zones mean you can hold whites at serving temperature in one compartment and reds in another. More zones is more flexible and, as we cover in the buying guide, more things to go wrong.

Compressor or thermoelectric. A compressor is a small refrigeration circuit, the same principle as your fridge. Thermoelectric uses a solid-state plate with no moving parts. This is the single biggest split in the category and it decides noise, vibration and whether the cabinet can cope with a warm room. We have a full comparison of the two.

Freestanding or built-in rated. A freestanding cabinet vents in a way that needs air around it, usually at the back or top. A built-in rated cabinet vents forward, through the plinth, so it can sit inside cabinetry with no clearance. This is not a preference, it is an engineering rating, and putting a freestanding unit under a counter will shorten its life. The built-in guide goes into it.

Whether it holds humidity. Purpose-built wine cabinets hold humidity in a range that keeps corks from drying. Cheap units and beverage coolers often do not, and almost nobody publishes a figure. See wine cellar humidity.

Notice what is not on that list: the brand, the colour of the LED strip, and the word on the box.

The one distinction worth keeping

There is one split in the vocabulary that does mean something, and it is worth learning because it changes which machine you buy.

An ageing cabinet has one job: hold a single temperature, somewhere between 10 and 14 degrees, for years, without drifting. One zone, no compromises, and you never touch the dial. That is the ageing cellar.

A service cabinet has a different job: have bottles ready to pour. Whites at 8 to 10, reds at 15 to 17, two or three zones, and you are opening the door constantly. That is the service cellar.

A multi-temperature cabinet tries to do both in one box, and the honest trade is that no single zone in it is perfect. That is the multi-temperature cellar.

Those three words describe genuinely different machines. Cooler, fridge and cellar do not.

Can you just use a normal fridge?

For a few days before serving, absolutely. Put the white in the fridge on Thursday, drink it on Saturday, nothing bad happens.

For anything longer, no, and for four separate reasons.

It runs at 4 to 5 degrees. That is far below anything wine wants for storage, and it is well below serving temperature for every red and most whites, so you are also pulling bottles out too cold and waiting.

It is dry. A domestic fridge actively removes moisture, which is what stops your vegetables going slimy. Over months that dries the cork from the outside, the cork shrinks, and air gets in.

It vibrates. More than a wine cabinet does, because it was never designed not to.

And it is full of food. Wine takes up smell surprisingly well through a cork over long periods.

None of that matters over a weekend. All of it matters over a year.

The trap: beverage coolers filed as wine cellars

This one costs people real money and it is worth knowing before you shop.

A beverage cooler is built for cans. It goes colder than wine wants, frequently down to 2 or 3 degrees, its shelves are flat rather than contoured, and a good number of them cannot reach the top of the range you need to hold a red at 15 to 17 degrees. It is a different appliance for a different job.

The problem is that shops do not separate them. Looking at the Amazon US best sellers in the Wine Cellars category on 9 September 2026, two of the top fifteen products were beverage refrigerators rated in cans rather than bottles, sitting in the ranking alongside actual wine cabinets. Nothing dishonest is happening, the categories are just coarse. But if you buy on rank without reading the specification, you can end up with a very good can fridge.

The tell is in the listing. If the capacity is quoted in cans, or the bottom of the temperature range is 2 or 3 degrees, or the shelves in the photograph are flat, it is a beverage cooler.

So what should you actually do

Ignore the noun. Read four numbers.

  1. The temperature range, and whether it covers what you drink.
  2. The number of zones.
  3. Compressor or thermoelectric.
  4. Freestanding or built-in rated.
