Most people choose the machine and then look for somewhere to put it. That is backwards. The room decides what the machine has to be capable of, and choosing in the wrong order is how people end up with a cabinet that cannot hold its temperature in the place they bought it for.

So start with the room.

The kitchen

The most popular spot and, on physics alone, the worst one. It is the hottest room in the house, it has an oven in it, and something is usually running.

That does not mean do not do it. Most cabinets live in kitchens and they are fine. It means two things follow automatically.

It has to be a compressor unit. A thermoelectric cabinet cools by holding a fixed gap below the surrounding air, so a kitchen at 30 degrees in August puts the inside somewhere near 18 with no way back down. The full comparison is here.

If it goes under the counter, it has to be built-in rated. A freestanding cabinet vents from the back or top and needs clearance. Enclose one and it breathes its own hot exhaust, runs permanently, holds badly and dies early. See the built-in guide.

Then keep it away from the oven, the dishwasher and the fridge’s own exhaust, and out of the patch of floor that gets afternoon sun.

The garage

Tempting, because there is space and nobody minds the noise. Also the one that quietly kills cabinets, and for a reason almost nobody mentions.

Everyone worries about summer, correctly. An unheated garage can hit 35 degrees and a thermoelectric unit has no answer to that.

The problem people miss is winter. Most wine cabinets, at every price, cool only. They have no heating element. So when the garage drops to 4 degrees in January, the cabinet does not hold 12, it follows the room down to 4, and the thermostat never calls for cooling because the inside is already colder than the set point. Your wine spends the winter at fridge temperature and the spring warming back up, which is exactly the swing you bought a cabinet to avoid.

A heated garage that stays above roughly 10 degrees is fine with a compressor unit. An unheated one is not, unless the cabinet explicitly advertises a winter or low-ambient mode, and most do not.

The basement

Usually the best room in the house for this, and occasionally the room that means you do not need a cabinet at all.

If your basement already sits between 10 and 14 degrees all year without help, you do not have a cooling problem. You have a racking problem. Buy shelves and spend the difference on wine. That is what a real cellar is, and it is the custom cellar route.

Two things to check before you commit. Humidity, because basements run damp and labels rot above roughly 80 percent even though the wine itself is fine. And water, because a basement that has flooded once will flood again, and bottles on the floor are the first casualty. See wine cellar humidity.

Under the stairs, in a cupboard, in a fitted unit

The classic mistake, and it is the same mistake as putting a freestanding cabinet under a counter.

A cupboard with a closed door is a box with no airflow. The cabinet dumps heat into it, the air in the cupboard warms up, and the cabinet is now cooling against a rising ambient of its own making. It runs constantly, it is louder, it holds worse and it wears out sooner.

If the space is enclosed, you need either a built-in rated cabinet venting forward into the room, or genuine ventilation into the cupboard. A louvred door is not decoration in this situation.

The living room, the bedroom, the study

Here the constraint is not heat, it is noise and vibration, and this is the one case where thermoelectric earns its keep. No compressor means no compressor cycle, so no intermittent hum starting up at two in the morning and effectively no vibration.

The trade is capacity. Nothing thermoelectric is large, so if you need more than about a dozen bottles in a quiet room, you are looking for a quiet compressor cabinet instead and reading reviews rather than decibel claims. Published noise ratings are manufacturer figures from a test room, not from your bedroom.

Also keep it off a suspended timber floor next to anything that spins. A washing machine two metres away on the same joists puts more vibration into your wine than the cabinet ever will.

The rules that apply everywhere

Stability beats coolness. A steady 20 degree room is a better home than one swinging between 14 and 28. The cabinet can cool. It cannot cope as well with being asked to chase.

No direct sunlight. UV degrades wine, glass doors let it in, and the sun is also a heat load the cabinet has to fight all afternoon.

Not against a heat source. Oven, dishwasher, radiator, boiler, or the warm exhaust side of the fridge.

Level it. A cabinet out of level seals the door badly and lets the compressor sit oddly. It takes five minutes with the adjustable feet and people skip it.

Leave the clearance the manual asks for. Usually a few centimetres at the back and top for a freestanding unit. This is the single most ignored line in the manual.

Which way the door opens.

On a lot of these cabinets the hinge side is not adjustable, and the manufacturer sells the left-hinged and right-hinged versions as two separate products. In the Amazon US best sellers on 9 September 2026, the same 52-bottle cabinet appeared twice in the top thirty as separate listings, one of them specified right-hinged, and a 28-bottle built-in model was listed specifically as left-hinged.

If your cabinet is going into a corner or a run of units, work out which way the door needs to swing before you order, not after it arrives. Reversible hinges exist, but they are a feature, not a default.

Can you put a wine cooler in a garage?

Only with care. An unheated garage swings from very hot in summer to near freezing in winter, and both ends cause problems. A thermoelectric unit cannot hold its temperature in summer heat, and in a cold garage most compressor cabinets have no heating element, so the interior simply follows the room down and the thermostat never calls for cooling. If the garage is heated and stays above roughly 10 degrees, a compressor cabinet is fine.

Can a wine cooler go under a kitchen counter?

Only if it is rated for built-in installation. A freestanding cabinet vents from the back or the top and needs air around it, so enclosing one traps its own exhaust heat, makes it run constantly and shortens its life. Built-in rated cabinets vent forward through the plinth and are designed to sit flush.

Where is the best place to put a wine cellar at home?

The most stable room you have, away from direct sunlight, external walls that bake in the afternoon, and anything that produces heat or vibration such as an oven, dishwasher, boiler or washing machine. Stability matters more than coolness: a steady 20 degree room is a better home for a cabinet than a room that swings between 14 and 28.
