Château Cantenac Brown unveiled an incredible artwork last week right in the middle of its vines. While this magnificent Tudor-style château in the heart of Margaux has hosted artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet and Pissarro, that artistic tradition keeps living on.
A monumental work, a tribute to the power of the land
Since the Lelous family bought Château Cantenac Brown, one theme stands out: the power of the earth. From building a new rammed-earth cellar to working the terroir and letting artists give it their own voice.
A land artwork by David Poppa
The Château Cantenac Brown team picked land-artist David Poppa to create an incredible piece in the middle of the vines. The 29-year-old artist has developed a patented, fully ephemeral paint that gets as close as possible to the techniques used in prehistoric cave art. Tristan Lelous, the owner of the château, says he wanted to bring tradition, modernity and environmental respect together by inviting this impressive artist to develop a work of art in the heart of the vines.

Working only with local, biodegradable materials, David Poppa’s work can only be ephemeral. That’s actually part of the message: rain will eventually return this piece to nature.
Upcoming auction to acquire the work as an NFT
But the piece couldn’t stop there. While rain will erase the original artwork, an NFT will come out of it and go up for auction starting in September, with proceeds going to the Conservatoire du Littoral. Using this technology makes total sense here. Since the work is ephemeral, the NFT preserves a trace of it in a certified, authenticated digital format. We can’t wait for this auction and to see what this work will fetch.
NFTs are taking root in wine
Château Cantenac Brown remains a pioneer in the NFT space. It’s the first 1855 Grand Cru Classé to unveil a project bringing together art and technology like this.
A few other recent initiatives also point to the growth and adoption of this technology. Château Edmus, Grand Cru Classé in Saint Émilion, recently auctioned five magnums of its latest vintage featuring a label by Dimitri HK alongside its NFT counterpart.
In another vein, the recent launch of WineChain, which just signed a partnership with shipping group CMA CGM, shows the interest in this kind of move.
In short, our wine cellars aren’t done evolving and wine lovers are in for a lot more surprises.
