A summary of the interview with Pierre-Marie Pattieu
Early roots: growing up with food and wine
Pierre-Marie Pattieu grew up in the South of France, between Avignon and Nîmes, surrounded by vineyards, good food, and a strong culture of sharing meals at the table. Wine was never something distant or intimidating, it was part of everyday life. This environment naturally shaped his curiosity and appreciation for hospitality, even before he could clearly define a career path.
At a young age, he chose to pursue hospitality studies in Nice, where he trained across all aspects of the industry, from kitchen work to front-of-house service. While he respected the discipline of cooking, Pierre-Marie quickly realized that his passion lay in service, storytelling, and connecting with guests.
Discovering the role of the Sommelier
A defining moment came during internships in high-end restaurants, notably in Corsica and later in Les Baux-de-Provence. Watching experienced sommeliers interact with guests, recommend wines, and create memorable dining experiences convinced Pierre-Marie that this was his calling. The role perfectly blended service, psychology, food pairing, and deep wine knowledge.
Hands-on experience during harvests and basic winemaking further grounded his understanding. Cleaning tanks, tasting fermenting grapes, and observing aging processes gave him insights that would later help him communicate authentically with both professionals and consumers.
England: opening up to the world of wine
What was meant to be a six-month stay in England turned into a decade-long chapter. Arriving with limited English and a very French-centric wine background, Pierre-Marie joined Hotel du Vin, where he was exposed to a truly international wine list. This was a turning point. He discovered New World wines, expanded his palate, and learned to think beyond traditional French benchmarks.
London further sharpened his skills through roles in Michelin-starred restaurants and later at Hedonism Wines, a luxury wine retailer. While retail was not his long-term path, it gave him invaluable insight into consumer behavior and the global fine wine market.
Joining Jackson Family Wines
Pierre-Marie’s growing interest in Californian wines eventually led him to Jackson Family Wines, initially without realizing he was already buying and recommending wines from their portfolio. After joining the company in the UK, he took on the challenge of representing American wines in fine dining restaurants. A demanding but formative experience.
Twelve years later, he continues with Jackson Family Wines, now based in Hong Kong as Prestige Account Manager for Asia. His role spans the entire region, working closely with importers, sommeliers, and top restaurants to build recognition for a diverse, global portfolio.
Asia: education, culture, and adaptation
Moving to Hong Kong marked another major shift. Pierre-Marie had to adapt not only to climate and language, but also to new cuisines, drinking cultures, and consumer expectations. Wine pairing took on a new dimension when faced with Cantonese, Sichuan, Thai, or Japanese food.
Traveling extensively across Asia, he observed how markets like China, Southeast Asia, and Japan have matured rapidly. Where status-driven labels once dominated, education and curiosity are now reshaping demand. Consumers increasingly seek authenticity, stories, and quality beyond traditional icons.
The role of the Sommelier today
For Pierre-Marie, a sommelier is not just a wine expert, but a bridge between producer and guest. The job is about understanding people as much as bottles: reading the table, the occasion, and the emotions involved. A great sommelier doesn’t impose rules but creates moments, adapting recommendations to taste, budget, and context.
Wine, he believes, is not a necessity but a pleasure; an extra that deserves care, respect, and humility.
Becoming a Master Sommelier
Pierre-Marie’s journey to becoming a Master Sommelier took ten years. The Court of Master Sommeliers is not a competition but a demanding qualification rooted in service, tasting, theory, and mentorship. Beyond exams, it fosters a strong global community built on shared stress, discipline, and passion.
He sees the title not as an endpoint, but as a responsibility: to keep learning, to mentor others, and to contribute to wine education, especially in emerging Asian markets.
A global vision for wine
From France to England, and now across Asia, Pierre-Marie’s story reflects the evolution of the global wine industry. Markets are becoming more educated, more diverse, and more open-minded. Young producers, new regions, and fresh styles are redefining what fine wine means today.
At its core, his philosophy remains simple: wine is about pleasure, connection, and shared experiences. One bottle, one conversation, and one moment at a time.
